Some argue that technology itself is neutral — that its impact depends only on who controls it. We side with historian Melvin Kranzberg's counterpoint instead: "Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral." Its deployment always produces consequences beyond its original design, and whether those consequences help or harm us depends entirely on human choices and the institutions we build to guide it. Those are the stakes we think we're operating under.

Left unchecked, could AI trend toward a dystopian future — one where the world's superpowers wield it to intensify global conflict, until humanity ends up serving the machine rather than the other way around?

AI is here to stay. The genie is out of the bottle, and it isn't going back in. So the real question is: how do we build the safeguards to ensure this emerging superintelligence serves the greater good — for people, for every species on this planet, and for the global ecosystem — safely? The answer is simple to state, if not to achieve: we, as humans, must stay in control of this technology. It can either serve humanity, or make humanity subservient to its own wills, visions, and goals. That choice is still ours to make.
